Global e-waste reached 62 million tonnes in 2022, with only 22.3% formally collected and recycled. Beyond environmental damage, discarded electronics create battery-related fire hazards and cybersecurity risks: 31% of surveyed US consumers disposed of devices without wiping their data. Yet accessible infrastructure combining safe collection, data security and responsible electronics management remains fragmented.
